Shoes for Porters
About us
The Shoes for Porters Non Government Organisation (NGO) was founded by an Everest Trekker from Perth Australia in conjunction with Eagle Treks Pty Ltd in Nepal. The Shoes for Porters foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of Sherpa people who live in Everest mountain areas by providing much needed footwear for Sherpa people of all ages.
The Sherpa People
“Sherpa” does not mean “porter” – Sherpa is the name of an entire group of people who originally migrated from Tibet about 500 years ago. Sherpa” means “Easterner.” Sherpa’s live in the environs of Mount Everest (8,848m) and the Himalayan region of Nepal. There are approximately 125,000 Sherpa people in Nepal.
The Shoes for Porters organisation is a token of gratitude that Eagle Treks, their clients and trekkers alike can make a difference. The opportunities for involvement with this Project are diverse, with results we can all be proud of.
SUPPORT
Nepal is one of the world’s poorest countries. Most Nepalese live on a $1 day or less. Living in the shadow of the 8,848m high Everest, the Sherpa people live in conditions of extreme poverty, unable to buy simple necessities such as decent shoes!
The people of Perth saw a need and took action! Perth people scratched around cupboards and found adequate pre-loved footwear to donate. Collection stations were set up in key Perth locations and footwear was sent to Nepal. Eagle Treks has provided the services to help distribute the footwear in Nepal.
Finished with your Footwear?
If you have finished with your footwear after your trekking, you can donate your shoes as part of the Shoes for Porters. Sturdy shoes, sneakers, walking shoes and boots preferred – all types of footwear for men, women and children urgently needed. This is a great opportunity for you to make a simple yet effective difference to needy people in Nepal and participate in a meaningful experience. Not much effort can bring about much reward and joy!
Shoes for Porters
The Shoes for Porters has been established to provide working Porters with adequate footwear for their long treks. Porters can rent (for free) decent shoes to wear on their long treks! Therefore, many Porters over time will be able to benefit from the Project and the rental program.
All other footwear donated by the people of Perth will be distributed to needy rural people in the Sherpa communities by Eagle Treks in Nepal.
The Shoes for Porters is located at Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal.
